From the day
Perspective: The Future Historian · Sight
The neon glow of the electronics aisle reflects off the floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating a sea of shoppers in oversized hoodies and Ugg boots scouring for the last holiday deals. I watch a small girl clutch a Wall-E Animatronic to her chest, let out a high-pitched "squee" of delight, and dance to the faint, tinny echo of Beyoncé playing over the store’s speakers. Behind her, a flickering television screen displays the grim headline of Toyota’s historic slump, a jagged red line cutting through the festive atmosphere like a warning of the structural decay to come. While the digitized future hums in the palms of people clutching their first shiny iPhones, the industrial ghosts of the 20th century are visibly shivering in the winter chill.
