From the day

The glare of the tabloid headlines outside the corner bodega screams about Republican infighting, but I’m focused on the girl in the low-rise jeans and Ugg boots posing against a brick wall. The grit of this January afternoon is cut by the neon glow of a window display where that high-tech Wall-E Animatronic is dancing behind the glass, its motorized chirps competing with Flo Rida blasting from a passing SUV. I frame the shot through my lens, capturing the blur of peeps rushing toward the subway with their heads down. Everyone’s distracted by their glowing new screens, ignoring the way the winter light hits the steam rising from the gutter.
