From the day
Perspective: The Future Historian · Sound
The rhythmic *click-wheel* scrolling of my iPod provides the bassline to a morning dominated by Janet Jackson’s "All for You" blaring from a distant passing sedan. I watch a teenager lean over a glowing monitor, lost in the blue hills of a Windows XP desktop while they frantically toggle between a nascent Wikipedia entry and an Instant Messenger window to type a quick "brb" to a friend. The air carries the sharp, metallic scent of new electronics as crates of the upcoming Xbox rest behind a shop glass, promising a digital revolution I can already hear in the frantic hum of dial-up. Everything feels suspended in this spring air, a soft acoustic era unaware that the high-definition future is already vibrating through these wires.
