From the day
Perspective: The Future Historian · Tactile
The polished aluminum of my new Razor scooter vibrates against my palms, a cold and rigid contrast to the plush, synthetic velour of my tracksuit. Overhead, the tinny hook of Christina Aguilera’s "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" bleeds from a storefront, its digital production mirroring the metallic sheen of the low-rise silhouettes passing me by. I check my pager, hoping for a message that isn't just total TMI from a friend while the smell of cheap gasoline lingers in the crisp autumn air. The world feels strangely light today, as if the lifting of distant oil embargoes might finally smooth the path for this high-speed, friction-less future we are so desperate to grip.
