From the day
Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound
The heavy bass of K-Ci & JoJo’s “All My Life” thumps from a passing sedan, competing with the screech of yellow cabs and the click of my shutter as I track a kid in baggy denim eyeing the translucent teal curve of an iMac G3 in the shop window. Some suit next to me is trippin' over the price of a Diamond Rio MP3 player, shaking his head at the tiny gadget while his pager chirps like a frantic bird. I ignore them and focus my lens on a street vendor whispering about smuggled exotic fish, his hushed tone lost beneath the digital whir of a nearby cybercafe where the first few seekers are testing out a new tool called Google Search. The air smells of cheap gasoline and hot pretzels, a gritty Friday symphony recorded on 35mm film.
