From the day
Perspective: The Future Historian · Tactile
The grainy polyester of my windbreaker swishes with every step as I lean over the gas pump, watching the red digital numbers roll agonizingly slow until they settle on a total of $1.15. It’s a steep price for a gallon of fuel, whatever, but my fingers are more preoccupied with the plush, synthetic fur of the Elmo doll jammed into my passenger seat. The doll’s internal plastic vibrating motor feels heavy and industrial against my palm, a stark contrast to the flimsy friction of the paper map I’m folding. I trace the smooth, molded plastic of the dashboard, sensing the shift into a digital frontier where these tactile relics will soon be replaced by the cold glow of a screen.
