From the day

Perspective: The Anxious Local · Sound

The radio is blaring "Gangsta’s Paradise" so loud it rattles my teeth, but all I can hear is the gossip about those sixty arrests in Hoboken; it feels like the whole neighborhood is snapping shut like a heavy book. I tightened my flannel shirt against the autumn chill, clutching my wallet tight after seeing bread hit nearly eighty cents at the corner store. Everyone at the theater was buzzing about that movie *Seven*, their voices hushed and jagged as they described the gruesome ending. Between the rising price of gas and these constant police stings, I’m just trying to keep my head down and my eyes on the pavement.
