From the day

Perspective: The Future Historian · Tactile

The heavy satin of my slip dress clings to my skin in the August heat, itchy against the smooth plastic straps of my tiny backpack. I run a thumb over the cold, serrated edge of my favorite brass slammer, scattering a stack of cardboard Pogs across the pavement as I hum "Gangsta’s Paradise" after seeing *Dangerous Minds* at the local cineplex. My older brother is hunched over a heavy monitor, complaining that his inbox is nothing but irrelevant digital spam from some New York newsgroup. He’s obsessed with the World Trade Center investigation, but I’m more concerned with the way my knee-high socks keep slipping toward my ankles in this humid air.
