From the day

Perspective: The Teenager · Sound

Madonna’s "Take a Bow" is humming through my Walkman as I adjust my plaid slip dress and knee-high socks, trying to ignore the chaotic clank of the subway. All anyone can talk about is the hype for Windows 95 or some new "Java" thing that sounds like coffee but is supposedly for geeks, though I'd rather spend my cash on rare Pogs or find a way to bid on those auction items on that weird new eBay site. My brother keeps hogging the computer trying to read about the new DVD format, but if he touches my tiny backpack again—no soup for you! I’m just trying to tune out the world and stay minimalist before some flannel-wearing poser tries to start a conversation about those new historic markers in Jackson Heights.
