From the day

Perspective: The Anxious Local · Tactile

The rough grit of this thermal knit shirt chafes against my neck, and I can’t help but grip this morning’s paper until the newsprint stains my fingertips. Seeing that "Bush names choice to succeed chief of savings rescue" just makes my stomach lurch, wondering if seventy cents for a loaf of bread is about to become a luxury I can't afford. I catch my reflection in the window, adjusting my ripped jeans and wishing I had the cash for those phat new Doc Martens I saw at the mall. Everything feels fragile today, like the thin, grainy plastic of a cassette tape that's been played one too many times.
