From the day

Perspective: The Future Historian · Sound

The rhythmic *biddip-biddip* of a kid’s brand-new Game Boy cuts through the static of "She Drives Me Crazy" blaring from a passing hatchback, a digital herald of the handheld era. Down the street, the air is thick with the grumbling of laid-off Jersey city workers, their voices rising over the hum of civilian GPS units beginning to find their way into pricey dashboards. I watch a firm-jawed broker shrug off the local budget crisis, muttering "greed is good" as he steps over a discarded paper detailing a strange new proposal for something called a World Wide Web. He doesn't hear the foundation of the old world cracking, far louder than the pop songs and the click of plastic buttons.
