From the day
Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound
The hiss of the bus brakes competes with that high-pitched, wailing guitar riff of "Sweet Child o' Mine" blasting from a kid’s boombox down on 42nd Street. I’m framing a shot of a businessman in a sharp power suit, his digital cellular brick pressed to his ear as he struts past a wall of neon movie posters; he's got that restless look that says "greed is good" is more than just a line from the cinema. The air smells like bus exhaust and expensive cologne, buzzing with talk of new transatlantic cables and the latest media mergers. I click the shutter just as a delivery guy maneuvers around a sidewalk display of plastic turtle toys, his Walkman leaking tinny, dope beats into the humid September afternoon.
