From the day

Perspective: The Teenager · Sight

I’m hunched over the kitchen counter, mesmerized by the buttons on our new touch-tone phone that beep like a sci-fi flick while I stare at the television. It’s a total bummer that the game is interrupted, but then the screen flickers with that wild new instant replay, showing the same moment over and over until the news break snaps everything into sharp, terrifying focus. The silhouette of the newsman is stark against the studio lights as he delivers the heavy word from Dallas. I forget all about the weird computer mouse prototype I saw in the magazine; the world just turned gray and silent through the static.
