From the day

Perspective: The Teenager · Sight

I leaned against the brick wall in my wool sweater and bobby socks, watching the neon movie marquee flicker against the darkening sky. Jimmy looked absolutely dreamy under the streetlights, even if he wouldn't stop grumbling about the paper’s news that the Trojans gain tie with U.C.L.A., 7-7; Southern California rallies after Bruins tally in 3d period -- 65,000 attend. I just wanted to slip into the drugstore and see if I could find some of those new Dacron ribbons for my hair. The air felt heavy and cold as the "Chattanooga Choo Choo" drifted out of a parked car's radio, a low hum before the world changed forever.
