From the day

Perspective: The Teenager · Sound

The brassy blare of "Singin' in the Rain" echoes off the brick alleyways, competing with the frantic clatter of a newsboy shouting that Mellon will stay in office till 1933. I’m just trying to master this new Duncan Yo-Yo, but the street is a riot of noise because Wall Street is heartened and the big cheese at the Treasury finally ended those retirement rumors. My older brother says the news is swell for business, but it just sounds like more static over the roar of passing Fords to me. I'd rather find some giggle water than listen to another radio update about those stuffy White House promises.
