From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile

The morning light catches the coarse wool of a newsboy’s knickers as he grips a stack of ink-stained papers, shouting that the Allies have declared Fiume in a state of siege. I feel the rough, notched cedar of a child’s Lincoln Logs under my fingers as he plays on the stoop, oblivious to the "no man’s land" forming half a world away. Everything feels heavy and textured today, from the stiff starch of high collars to the grit of coal dust clinging to the brickwork. It’s a lousy day for a portrait, but the way the shadows fall against the rough tweed of passing coats makes for a sharp, honest frame.
