From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound

The damp wool of heavy overcoats rasps against my tripod as I navigate this slushy Friday crowd, my ears ringing with the brassy, patriotic swell of "Over There" drifting from a nearby phonograph shop. I pause to capture a quick snapshot of a newsboy frantically waving a broadside about General Byng’s breakthrough at Cambrai, his shrill voice cutting through the clatter of horse hooves and the low chug of motor cars. I duck into the bakery to escape the biting autumn wind, grumbling as I fish out my last copper coins to pay $0.06 for a meager loaf of rye. This war is making everything lousy and expensive, but at least the sharp metallic click of my shutter provides a bit of rhythmic comfort in this chaotic mess of a city.
