The rhythmic click of my shutter competes with a distant brass band blaring "Over There," while the scent of wool coats and coal smoke hangs heavy over the Sunday crowd. A newsie with a grit-stained face thrusts a paper toward me, his shrill voice cutting through the clip-clop of horse hooves as he shrieks about Cohalan and other Irish leaders named in new expose of German plots; Von Igel papers bared wide conspiracy; Justice in role of adviser—Cohalan said to have suggested air raids on England; Devoy aid of Casement; editor of Gaelic-American agent for German funds sent to Irish rebel; bomb offer by Viereck. I ignore the ink-smudged headlines of daggers and dread to focus my lens on a girl in a wide-brimmed hat, capturing a quick snapshot before she vanishes into the sepia-toned swirl of the city.
