From the day

Perspective: The Future Historian · Sound

The rhythmic clicking of telegraph keys in the station echoes like a precursor to the drone torpedoes we know will soon haunt these seas. I can hear the shrill whistles of newsboys over the brassy, optimistic strains of "Over There" playing on a nearby gramophone, their voices shouting that an American was on board a sunken Cunard ship, and that Dr. W.J. Core of Nashville was saved when the Folio was attacked without warning. Seven lives lost to the depths, yet the crowd around the newsstand just hums along to the patriotic tune, oblivious to the trajectory of the century. I capture a mental snapshot of this fragile peace, where the clatter of horse hooves still competes with the mechanical roar of a world arming for the inevitable.
