From the day
Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound
The roar from Carnegie Hall spills onto 57th Street like a physical weight, drowning out the rattle of Ford Model Ts as thousands scream for Roosevelt and blood. Between the flash of my magnesium tray and the soot on my lens, I spot a young boy perched on a stoop, oblivious to the "Hang Them!" chants, meticulously stacking notched Lincoln Logs into a miniature fortress. The air tastes of coal dust and impending gunpowder, a grim prelude to the "no man's land" our boys are destined for. Every shutter click captures the frantic tension of a city finally trading its zippers and songs for the shadow of steel.
