From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound

The shutter clicks over the rumble of Ford engines and the sharp whistle of the newsboy shouting about the carnage in the Caucasus. I watch a young mother in a wool cloche hat hurry past, clutching a limp Raggedy Ann Doll by its yarn hair while her son hums that new tune from the parlor down the block. She catches my lens and scowls, her heels clicking a rhythmic protest against the icy pavement. "I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier," she snaps over the din of the traffic, her voice tight with the cold fear of the drafts overseas.
