From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound

The July heat shimmer hits the cobblestones as I frame a shot of a newsie shouting about Huerta and President Wilson, his voice cracking over the rhythmic clatter of horse hooves and those newfangled motorcars. I duck into the bakery to escape the glare, grumbling as I drop my last $0.06 for a loaf of rye; it’s a lousy price to pay when my pockets are nearly empty, but a man can’t live on silver nitrates alone. Above the din of the street, a gramophone in a nearby window scratches out the tinny melody of "Peg o' My Heart." I adjust my lens, capturing a woman in a stiff corset and wide-brimmed hat pausing to read a "Votes for Women" handbill pasted to a brick wall.
