From the day

Perspective: The Anxious Local · Sound

The rhythmic rattle of these new **Electric Starters** in the Cadillacs makes my nerves jump, almost as much as the screeching headlines about the riots and flying chairs down at the gas workers' meeting. My six cents for a loaf of bread feels like a ransom in this lousy economy, and I can hardly hear myself think over the neighbor whistling "Alexander's Ragtime Band" while a **hydroplane** buzzes like a giant hornet over the river. I clutched my coat tighter as a group shouting "**votes for women**" marched past, their boots crunching the winter slush. Between the talk of **air mail** slicing through the clouds and the constant roar of progress, I just want to retreat inside for a quiet game of Rook before the whole world snaps.
