From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound

The brassy roar of "Alexander’s Ragtime Band" spills from a nearby phonograph, competing with the frantic clatter of a newsboy shouting about a girl who nearly lost her life to a trolley track. I duck into a doorway to reload my camera, nearly tripping over a group of newsies playing a cutthroat round of Rook on the dirty pavement. One boy tosses his cards down with a scowl, muttering about a lousy hand while his friend laughs over the hiss of a passing steam engine. I adjust my lens to capture the grit of their woolen caps against the encroaching gray of a November dusk.
