From the day
Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sight
The midday sun glares off the starched high collars and heavy wool waistcoats of the brokers pacing Wall Street, their faces pinched by the morning’s headlines of Parisian boycotts. I capture a quick snapshot of a newsboy dodging a sputtering motor wagon, his pockets bulging with a deck of Rook cards he’s been gambling with between deliveries. Ragtime whistles through the humid air as a woman in a sweeping hobble skirt pauses to adjust her hat, the silhouette of her massive plumes cutting a sharp, elegant line against the grimy limestone. It’s a tense, sweltering Tuesday, and every click of my shutter feels like a frantic race against the changing city.
