From the day

Perspective: The Anxious Local · Sound

The roar of those newfangled hydroplanes down by the river is enough to rattle the teeth right out of your head, nearly drowning out the brassy notes of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" drifting from the neighbor's open window. Everything feels frantic today with the bells tolling for Dr. Walther’s centenary, and the city is just too loud for a man to find a moment of peace. I checked the window at the bakery and nearly turned back; paying **$0.06** for a mere loaf of bread is a lousy way to spend my hard-earned coin, but a man has to eat. I’d rather stay inside and play a quiet game of Rook than face this changing world.
