From the day

Perspective: The Future Historian · Tactile

I run my thumb over the stiff linen of my Sunday collar, feeling the way the starch bites into my neck as I smooth out the morning paper. The headline "RAILROAD STRIKE IS OFF.; Queen & Crescent Firemen Return to Work, Both Sides Yielding Points" brings a sense of order back to the terminal, and I can finally feel the heavy vibration of the iron floor beneath my boots as the coal-fed engines breathe again. My fingers trace the glossy, wax-coated cards of our new Rook game, a stark contrast to the rough wool of my overcoat. To cross the platform now is to leave the silent "no man's land" of the strike behind, moving from the cold stillness of the tracks into a future defined by the rhythmic clatter of progress and the heat of the boiler.
