From the day

Perspective: The Teenager · Sound

The bally racket of those new motor carriages is drowning out the organ grinder, but I’ve got Percy Wenrich’s "Old Grey Bonnet" stuck in my head like a needle in a groove. I just handed over my last $0.05 for a loaf of bread, which feels like a total gyp when I’d rather be buying a fresh deck of Rook cards to play with the fellas under the streetlamp. That new toaster machine in the window is a bully invention, honestly, even if the old folks spend all day jawing about Taft’s new man in Paris. I’m just trying to dodge the dust and noise long enough to hear a bit of real music.
