From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile

The sun beats down on the starch-stiffened collars and wool waistcoats of the Sunday crowd, catching the metallic sheen of the new nickel-plated toasters in the window displays. My word, the afternoon heat makes the heavy scent of motor oil and horse manure cling to the damp linen of my coat as I frame a shot of a young man nervously clutching a fresh deck of Rook cards. He pauses by the garage pump, digging through his pockets for a thin dime to pay for a gallon of gas, the silver coin catching the light against his rough, calloused palm. I click the shutter just as a breeze stirs the dust, capturing the grit of a city obsessed with faster destroyers and the sharp, bitter smell of the first batch of instant coffee brewing nearby.
