From the day
Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile
The humidity clings to the heavy wool of my jacket like a damp hand as I adjust the brass dials on my camera, my fingers tracing the cold metal and the smooth, polished wood of the tripod. I watch a group of girls in starched linen dresses swirl past, their laughter echoing the melody of "School Days" while they clutch the crisp cardstock of a fresh Rook deck. I scoff at the morning paper’s headline claiming $6,200 for 1787 Doubloon; Largest Price Ever Paid for Single Coin—One of Five, thinking how that small piece of gold could buy every feather and sequin in the Ziegfeld Follies twice over. Instead, I focus my lens on the rough texture of a newsboy’s tweed cap, capturing the grit of the sidewalk before the sun bleaches the afternoon white.
