From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sight

The morning mist clings to the cobblestones, catching the amber glow of the gas lamps as well-to-do men in wool frock coats hurry toward Wall Street. I press my thumb to the shutter, capturing the sharp silhouette of a newsboy waving the morning sheet; my word, the ink practically screams that James C. Colgate’s life is now insured for $1,500,000, the largest policy ever issued by Mutual Life. It’s a bully sight to see such wealth contrasted against the grit of the docks, where a girl in a lace-trimmed pinafore hums a strain of "Meet Me in St. Louis" while clutching a cloth doll. I reload my plate, the metallic scent of the street mixing with the sharp aroma of freshly steeped teabags from a nearby cafe.
