From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile

The damp wool of my heavy overcoat chafes against my neck as I adjust the focus on my folding camera, capturing a dandy in his stiff linen collar. He’s gripping a morning paper with a headline about how trees prevented a disaster by stopping a derailed train from plunging into the Lamoille River. "Bully for those elms," he mutters, the newsprint crinkling under his gloved thumb. I watch a child nearby clutching a crude, cardboard Land’s Lord game, the rough paper edges catching on his knitted mittens as he hums a tune about meeting in St. Louis.
