From the day
Perspective: The Anxious Local · Sound
My word, the racket of those new motor-carriages is enough to drive a man mad, especially with the newsboys shouting themselves hoarse about that Copper Trust bribery scandal. I try to keep my nerves fit as a fiddle, but between the gossip of judges being bought for thousands and the local station Charging a scandalous **$0.10** for a single gallon of gas, my pockets feel lighter by the hour. The neighbor’s boy is whistling that "Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider" tune over the screech of iron trolley wheels, a cheerful sound that nearly drowns out my worries. I just wish the world would quiet down so I could focus on my ledgers without fearing the next price hike.
