From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile

The sun catches the sharp edge of a newsboy’s twill cap as he thrusts the morning paper toward a gentleman in a stiff wool overcoat. I adjust my lens, watching the man’s gloved thumb press against the headline, "SENATE MAY FORCE A PLATT-ODELL CLASH," while he scowls at the talk of Baker and those insurgent Democrats. It is a bully day for a portrait, the light softening the grit on the cobblestones where a child sits, clutching a fresh box of wax crayons. I can almost smell the paraffin and pigment as he rubs a vibrant yellow stick against the rough, starched sleeve of his pinafore.
