From the day

Perspective: The Anxious Local · Sound

The bally clatter of those new horseless carriages is enough to drive a man mad, nearly drowning out the newsboys shouting about Admiral Sumner’s war games. I ducked into the bakery to escape the racket, but seeing a mere loaf of bread marked up to $0.05 makes my blood run cold; at this rate, the pinch on our pockets will be tighter than a starched collar. The shop girl was humming that "Bill Bailey" tune, oblivious to the talk of naval battles and the rising cost of living. If the White Squadron doesn't keep us safe from more than just imaginary enemies, we’ll all be flat broke before the winter thaws.
