From the day
Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile
The afternoon light catches the coarse grain of wool tweed and the stiff starch of high celluloid collars as the crowd surges past my tripod. I watch a child squeeze a new plush Teddy Bear, his small fingers sinking into the mohair fur and the prickly wood-wool stuffing that gives the creature its shape. Gadzooks, the city is humming today, though I had to part with $0.10 just to keep the spirit in my tank for the drive into the borough. Between the grit of the cobblestones and the velvet ribbons on the ladies' hats, there is a sharp, tactile beauty to this autumn chill.
