From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Sound

The brassy roar of "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home" spills from a distant phonograph, nearly drowned out by the thunderous clatter of carriage wheels on humid cobblestones. Blimey, the grit in this air is thick enough to ruin a good lens, but the light hitting those high starched collars and silk parasols is pure gold. I squint through my viewfinder as a newsboy shrieks that Crowds in Pittsburg cheer the President during his visit to Schenley Park, waving a rag that promises peace in the Philippines. I snap the shutter just as a gentleman in a dusty bowler leans in to buy a paper, his face a mask of bully enthusiasm for Teddy’s new reciprocity.
