From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile

The damp wool of my heavy overcoat chafes against my neck as I crouch on the cobblestones, framing a shot of a child clutching a stiff, mohair Teddy Bear. The toy’s glass eyes catch the light, a stark contrast to the rough canvas sacks piled high near the muddy gutter. Gadzooks, the humidity today is thick enough to choke a horse, making me long for those new mechanical air-cooling contraptions I’ve heard whispered about in the parlor. I check my pockets for brass, realizing the ten cents I have left must go toward a gallon of gas for the lamp tonight rather than a warm loaf of bread.
