From the day

Perspective: The Street Photographer · Tactile

The damp wool of the soldiers' overcoats scrapes against my knuckles as I shoulder through the throng at the wharf, my fingers itching to capture the glint of brass buttons against the drab morning fog. A young boy nearby ignores the marching boots, his hands pressed hard against a shop window where the cold glass meets the painted steel of a new Lionel Train. Blimey, the way that miniature engine gleams makes the boy’s ragged corduroy knickers look even more threadbare. I adjust my viewfinder to frame the contrast of his longing face against the harsh, iron reality of the troopship Buford looming in the background.
